His Own Mind

"If we are to survive, we must have ideas, vision, and courage. These things are rarely produced by committees. Everything that matters in our intellectual and moral life begins with an individual confronting his own mind and conscience in a room by himself."

-- Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., the great American historian and social critic, who died yesterday at the age of 89. The New York Times deemed him a "Historian of Power."

I am curious my well-read friend, which one of his books you would recommend reading first?

Start with "A Thousand Days: John F. Kennedy in the White House" -- for the "romance" (AMS's word) and feeling, not the accuracy.
