I was saddened tonight to learn that New York Times columnist and wordsmith William Safire died today at the age of 79 from pancreatic cancer.Safire's NYT Magazine column "On Language," in which he examined the history and use of words, was one of my favorite parts of the Sunday paper.
Rest in peace, etymologist extraordinaire. You will be missed.
